About Us

The Social Studio is a not-for-profit fashion school, manufacturer and store based in Yálla-birr-ang (Collingwood).

We educate, employ and empower people from refugee and new migrant backgrounds through clothing production, retail and creative practice. Every garment carries the story of the person who made it — and every purchase helps build the next opportunity.

How it works

  • Teach

We deliver RMIT-accredited training in fashion and textiles, combining hands-on studio learning with industry pathways.

  • Make

Our in-house production studio provides paid employment and real-world manufacturing experience. In-house production creates small-batch garments rooted in craftsmanship and care.

  • Create

Studio-made garments using industry excess fabrics (deadstock) are sold in-store and online alongside other values-aligned designers.

  • Return

As a registered social enterprise, all profits go back into the work of the studio. Every purchase supports training, employment and creative opportunities.

Thanks to the support we receive through our donations and social enterprise activities, all of our education and work experience programs are provided free of charge.

This means that every cent generated through the Studio is invested right back into creating social benefits for our students, staff and their communities.

Our team spans school, studio and store — supporting students and makers as they build skills and creative pathways. They’re supported by a board providing strategic guidance and governance to ensure the studio’s long-term impact.
